As the United States continues to recover from the Great Recession, there are signs that things are beginning to look up on the job market. Recent federal reports indicate the unemployment rate is continuing to dip, even showing some signs of sustained job growth. However, many of the jobs that were lost are unlikely to be restored as industries have downsized, becoming more efficient as companies learn to do more with fewer people. Therefore, it’s important for those continuing their education to pick programs where the prospects of getting a job are the best. Here are three areas with secure job prospects.
Top Three Degrees with Secure Job

1. Health care

This sector first became strong as employers knew the aging Baby Boomers would need medical care. Now, with such a large aging population, health care is an even hotter market. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 29 percent growth in health care jobs in the United States from 2010 to 2020. Specific fields recommended are registered nurses and home health aides. The bureau estimates about 711,900 new registered nurse slots will open and about 706,300 new home health aides will be needed. Between the two, registered nurses command the higher salary.

2. Computer and information technology

The number of jobs in this field is expected to grow 22 percent by 2020. The digital revolution is complete, and we need people to keep it going. The bureau expects 758,800 new computer and information technology jobs by 2020. Specialties in highest demand will be software development, cyber security and network infrastructure.

3. Engineering

Engineering has been one of the most secure fields in the job market for a long time. During the recession, however, some employers did downsize. Now, as the economy picks up, they are expected to need to fill engineering positions. Jobs in this field are expected to increase by 10 percent by 2020. The Bureau of Labor Statistics makes a point of recommending civil engineering, saying this specialty will add some 51,100 jobs. Expertise will be required to work on aging infrastructure. Civil engineers will fix existing systems and design and create new roads, water systems and pollution control systems, the bureau says. If you are interested in this, consider a masters civil engineering online program.
As you consider your career options, you should balance personal fulfillment with job prospects. You want to ensure that your investment of time and money will pay off. Taking the time to research future employment trends will help you land the position you desire.
