Students with a degree in journalism can work in several fields such as news reporting or magazine writing. The field of journalism is also expanding to include social media to keep up with changing technology. Students who study journalism will learn basic skills such as reporting and editing while gaining experience through internships and shadowing. 

Columbia University

Columbia University, located in New York City, is an Ivy League college that was ranked the 4th best school in the country by U.S. World News and Report. Columbia University’s journalism program is only open to graduate students, however.  An undergraduate degree in journalism is not available. The Master’s program can take 9 to 10 months to complete. 

Berkeley University
Located in northern California, Berkeley University was ranked the number 21 school in the country according to U.S. News and Report. Its Graduate School of Journalism offers 13 different tracks, including business, science, investigative journalism or politics, that aspiring journalists can follow in order to get their Master’s Degree. Berkeley University is highly selective as their acceptance rate is 21%. 

Northwestern University

NorthwesternUniversity offers both undergraduate and graduate level journalism degrees. Students will gain first-hand experience in the life of a journalist through internships and shadowing employees in the journalism field.  The curriculumimmerses students in writing, producing, editing and reporting in order to fully develop their skills. 

Syracuse University

SyracuseUniversity offers undergraduate degrees in television-film-radio, broadcast and digital journalism as well as newspaper and online journalism. It can be very hard to get into Syracuse’s School of Journalism since less than 9% are accepted. Master’s degrees in journalism are also available from Syracuse University. 

University of Florida

The Universityof Florida is home to the second largest undergraduate journalism program in the United States and has been touted as one of the top 10 journalism schools.  The University of Florida’s journalism program offers something for every field: magazine writers, online journalists and newspaper writers.  The program strives to create honest and ethical journalists for the future. 

University of Missouri in Columbia

Students who wish to study journalism at the University of Missouri must be accepted to the university as well as the School of Journalism.  Students will also gain real-world experience through working with news outlets around the community. The University of Missouri in Columbia was one of the first journalism schools to be established in the world. 

Indiana University Bloomington

The School of Journalism at Indiana University Bloomington offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The journalism classes are intended to be challenging and are designed to align with current events. Basic skills like editing and reporting are also taught to journalism students.
Students with a journalism degree will have a well-rounded array of skills which will prepare them for many different types of jobs. They are encouraged to join the university’s newspaper or participate in social media in order to hone their skills. Social media journalism is growing rapidly as technology continues to change and evolve.
