PWC student-athletes competed at the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) Mindanao Games held at the Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro last February 6-10, 2019.

The CEAP Mindanao Games held annually is participated in by the different regions of Mindanao, This year, the Games consisted of 16 events: athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, chess, dance sports, 11-a-side football, futsal, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, vocal singing, and volleyball.

CEAP X hosted this year’s Games with the theme “Filipino Youth in Mission: Beloved, Gifted, Empowered”. The even kicked off with a concelebrated Mass and opening program on February 6 at the Xavier Ateneo Sports Center.

PWC’s team of 38 delegates participated in 4 out of the 16 events and managed to place in all of them. Mark Ursabia, Grade 11, bagged the championship title for taekwondo. Education student Kythryn Geverola was also hailed champion for chess college level, female division. Further, PWC placed 2nd runner-up for basketball-men division and 1st runner-up for volleyball-men division, both in the college category.

The results were a big feat especially for the college department’s first appearance in the Mindanao Games. PWC notably competed last year for badminton-high school category.

Albeit long and arduous, the journey towards the Mindanao Games was a necessary challenge for the School Sports and Development Office (SSDO) chair Dr. Leah Cabang. Though the Mindanao Games is a clash of regional champions, PWC’s basketball and volleyball teams were actually runner-ups in the regional level who were picked to represent Region XI due to unavailability of the winning teams. “Our teams really gave the opponents a hard time in claiming their wins,” shared Dr. Cabang of the the regional games experience, “it’s as if we were prepared for this moment; our performance [in the regionals] is testament that our qualifying for the Mindanao Games is well-deserved.”

The experience shows SSDO’s drive to pursue opportunities not just for the improvement of its athletes’ skills but also in cultivating the attitude of being ready to take on any challenge, rooted in trusting the process.
