Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary News

November 3 saw the arrival of seminarians from semestral break. But this year, before formally starting the second semester, seminarians and formators, together with Fr. Manoling Francisco, departed for Valencia City, Bukidnon. The next day, November 4, the Ignacio the Musical was presented, both in the afternoon and evening, at San Agustin Institute of Technology Gymnasium. On November 5, before heading back to the seminary, Fr. Norlan Julia presided at the 7AM mass at San Agustin Parish, with the seminarians as the choir.

On November 7, classes for the second semester formally started. The number of seminarians was then reduced to 37 with one T1 and T4 leaving the seminary. The seminarians then conducted the election for the semester’s new house officials. On November 10, the seminarians had their monthly recollection with Fr. Robbie Sian giving the recollection points. On Nov 11, the monthly  benefactors mass was held, presided by Fr. Niel Joy Molion. The annual Celibacy/Sexuality seminar for T4 seminarians was held on Nov 18-20. Parents of T4 also came for the seminar which culminated in the Celibacy Ring Rites on Monday evening, Nov. 20. Two days later, on Nov 22, two seminarians from the Archdiocese of CDO were ordained deacons by Arch. Tony Ledesma as the San Agustin Cathedral.

In the afternoon of Nov. 22, the regular episcopal board meeting was held. Arch. Ledesma presided over the meeting as chair of the board. The meeting was held in the newly refurbished Arevalo Hall. Following the meeting was the fusion dinner with XU Jesuits. It has recently become a practice to hold fusion dinner between the XU Jesuits and SJVTS formators. Wednesdays seem to be a more favourable schedule rather than Sunday nights as previously done.

Over 60 ministries are currently represented at our church. The Ministry to Internationals promotes the diverse and cosmopolitan character of our church, in order that we might increasingly become a "house of prayer for all nations".

As an annual event, the seminary celebrated the Mindanao Week of Peace. At the inaugural activity on November 30, the seminarians, together with Fr. Norlan Julia and Fr. Robbie Sian, joined the Walk for Peace which was participated also by our Muslim and Lumad brothers and sisters. In line with the said event, the seminary also had a pastoral conference on the evening, with the theme: “Pathways to Peace.” Ms. Mona Lisa D. Pangan, as the resource speaker, shared her experiences as an advocate of peace among Muslims and Christians.

Fr. Mat Sanchez directed the 30 day retreat of the Galilee Year (GY) seminarians from November 6 to December 6. Joining the four GY seminarians are a seminarian and a nun from Malaybalay.
