University of Santo Tomas News The Center for Religious Studies and Ethics (CRSE) is co-organizing the 2017 International Conference on Religion in a Secular Society: Challenges and Perspectives, to be held from June 19-20, 2017 in the University of Constanta, Romania. Joining in the Scientific Committee is Rev. Fr. Jannel N. Abogado, O.P., DTPS, CRSE Director, and Prof. Jove Jim S. Aguas, PhD, CRSE resident researcher and Philosophy faculty member. Abogado and Aguas are the only two Philippine representatives. The conference proposes a comprehensive approach of understanding the complexity of the secularization phenomenon. Concretely, this academic event intends to answer at some capitals questions which will clarify the meanings of secularization, secularism, post-secularism from theological, philosophical, sociological and political perspective: How do the theories of secularization and (post) secularization affect the relations between the political and spiritual power, and especially how are they reflected in the interreligious and intercultural dialogue? How do traditional religions relate to new forms of religiosity that tend to take the place of traditional ones? Can traditional religions be used as a resource rather than as threats in structuring the public space? Is secularization a counter reaction to an empty religious or spiritual space?
