Globalization and rapid technological advancement are perhaps the strongest drivers of change in the world today. Globalization means more integrated economies and larger markets as well as faster dissemination of innovations and inventions. A consequence of these change drivers is that, in the world of work, some jobs are disappearing while new ones are emerging.

Jobs that can be automated such as telemarketing and many areas of accounting and auditing will vanish from the work landscape. Jobs that require creativity and human “touch” (think yoga instructors, painters and artists, writers…) and ICT skills (programmers, systems and data analysts, network engineers) will remain and offer the best opportunities for growth.

Who will thrive in the “new” future? Those who are entrepreneurial about themselves—who realize that their life is their most important life-project, who not only have the so-called 21st-century skills but who are able to create their own futures like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg.

Schools that produce future-ready graduates are those that can create a school culture in which students own their learning goals and build up resilience, self-confidence, and self-knowledge. It would be a culture that allows students to tap into their creativity and provides opportunities for students to pursue their interests and passions.
