Did you know two Notre Dame landmarks were dedicated on past Memorial Days? The statue of Fr. Corby, a Holy Cross priest who served as a military chaplain during the Civil War and twice as Notre Dame president, was dedicated in 1911. The statue, which depicts the moment Fr. Corby offered general absolution to all troops before the Battle of Gettysburg, was recently restored to its place outside of Corby Hall after being moved for construction.Thirteen years later, the East Door of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was dedicated in 1924. The entrance, inscribed with the familiar phrase God, Country, Notre Dame, is a memorial to the students, alumni and faculty members who sacrificed their lives in World War I.

Around 1890, freshman Paul Wood put oil to canvas in a painting he called Absolution under Fire. It captured this moment. It is on display at the Snite Museum. Father Corby was the chaplain for the Irish Brigade within the Army of the Potomac. Sadly, Wood died the following summer in a Chicago fire.

Words by which to Live. 💙💛☘️‘056miles in this morning in Memoriam.

His monument at Gettysburg is the exact same ❤ Need to visit his Notre Dame monument next time I'm there.

Great tributes to those who served 🇺🇸

Thank you for your sacrifice.❣️God bless you and your loved ones! 💙❤️🤍💙❤️🤍

However, the older CSC monks would have a fit about the flag's being raised higher than Sacred Heart's cross and mother Mary's crown. N.B.: Notre Dame's "skyline" is carefully managed.

“It’s really important because it helps us understand how spirituality changes and how information is passed along. If we don’t explore these things, it’s just a bunch or rocks or a pretty building.
