School Summary

  • HISTORY

The La Consolacion University Philippines, formerly known as University of Regina Carmeli, is a co-educational Catholic University established and administered by the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation (ASOLC). The school was established in 1937 when Doña Estefania del Rosario Vda. de Jacinto, a sister of Mother Catalina de Jesus, OSA, donated a property for the education of the children of poor families in Barasoain, Malolos. At that time, it was to be the only educational institution in the locality.

The first formal attempt to apply for a university status took place in 1993. The President sent a formal letter of intent to the Secretary of the Department of Education Culture and Sports, Hon. Isidro Cariño together with a project proposal for the conversion of the Regina Carmeli College to a University. On June 10, 1993, RCC received the initial findings of the Office of the Secretary of the DECS. More documentary evidences were sought on the human and physical resources of the institution.

It was December 4, 1997, when the Commission for the much-awaited decision invited the President and some members of the academic council. Finally, CHED en banc Resolution 144.97 officially converted Regina Carmeli College to a university status under the name University of Regina Carmeli (URC).

In January 8, 2011, by virtue of a congregational decision that school being run by the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolacion would be under one name, “La Consolacion School/College/University”, as the case maybe, management applied to the Securities and Exchange Commission for the change of name from URC to LCUP. On March 2, 2011, the commission approved amended articles of incorporation and by-laws of SEC-CR Reg. No. 7797 officially converting University of Regina Carmeli to La Consolacion University Philippines. With this new name, LCUP commits itself even more to be a provider of world class professionally competent human resource who can ensure the sustainability of a Christo-Centric Stewardship of his/her community. Mother Mary, our consolation, pray for us.

#LaConsolacionU
#Augustinian
#MarianSEPTEMBER 8 | FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The Church celebrates the dawning of the day of Redemption - the moment when she who was to be the Mother of our Savior was born. The Blessed Virgin occupies a unique place in the history of salvation. Heaven rejoices at her birth. The Lord reserves for her the highest mission ever entrusted to any creature. We rejoice in the certainty that the Mother of God is our Mother, too. This 5th c. feast marks the anniversary of the dedication of a basilica in Jerusalem built, according to tradition, on the location of the home of St. Anne, the mother of Mary; patroness of Cuba.

• PRAYER

Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

28 AUGUST 2018

Today in the Augustinian calendar, we celebrate the solemnity of Our Holy Father, St. Augustine of Hippo.

St. Augustine was one of the great founders of monasticism in the Western Church, bishop, theologian, preacher, writer and Doctor of the Church. None of these titles would please him, however, as much as the simple one he used to describe himself: "servant of God". For whatever we achieve in life, whatever gifts and talents we have been given, are of little value unless they lead us, as they did Augustine, to know, love, and serve God ever more deeply.

Augustine was born in Tagaste, Souk-Ahras, Algeria on November 13, 354 to Patricius, a pagan, and Monica, a fervent Catholic. He was endowed with abundant human and intellectual gifts as well as in inquisitive mind and a passionate spirit, all of which brought him great pain at times, while leading him to discoveries about himself, life, and God, as well. He also became a rhetorician and teacher in Africa and later in Rome and Milan. Though he has been admitted in the cathechumenate of the Catholic Church by his mother as a a child, he did not find satisfaction in the Church during adolescence and young adulthood, and instead was drawn to other forms of spiritual expression, especially the Manichean sect and later in astrology. Finally, he embraced skepticism. In retrospect, however, he was able to discern various moments of spiritual growth or conversion until a final climatic moment when he decided to embrace Christ fully in the Catholic Church.

Following his baptism in 387, together with his son and some friends, he returned with them to his hometown of Tagaste to begin a monastic. He was ordained priest in 391 and became bishop of that See in 397.

Augustine was a profilic writer, an accomplished preacher, a monastic leader, a theologian, pastor, contemplative, and mystic. He died on August 28, 430 at almost 76 years of age as North Africa was being invaded by the Vandals and the Church there was being devastated. His remains were taken to Sardinia and later to Pavia, Italy, where they are now preserved in the basilica of San Pietro in Ceil d'Oro.

You have made us for yourself, O Lord,
and our hearts are restless until they
rest in you.” – Saint Augustine. O
Lord, you search me and you know me,.

You have made me for yourself
For you alone my God
And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

You have made me for yourself
For you alone my God
And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

Let me know myself, let me know you

That knowing you my only God
That I may love you more and more
My God, my only Good

You have made me for yourself
For you alone my God
And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

Possess my soul, possess my heart
My mind my will my whole being
That I may live for you alone
My God, my only love

You have made me for yourself
For you alone my God
And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

You have made me for yourself
For you alone my God
And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

And restless is my heart
Til it rest in you

Today we commemorate the 78th year death anniversary of one of the foundresses of the Augustinian Sister of Our Lady of Consolation, Venerable Mother Consuelo Barcelo y Pages.

Venerable Mother Consuelo was born on July 24, 1857, in Sarriá, Barcelona, Spain, to Salvador Barceló y Roces and Maria Pagés y Campanya.[1] Her siblings were Salvador, Joaquin, Ana Maria and Ignes Joaquina Vicenta, (the future Mother Rita Barceló).

Joaquina studied for fourteen years and was an intern at the Colegio de las Esclavas del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (The Slaves of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) in Barcelona.

Despite her outgoing personality, she felt a calling to the contemplative life like her eldest sister, Ana Maria. She entered the Monasterio de las Comendadoras de San Juan de Jerusalén in Barcelona. The recurrence of an abscess in her knee forced her to leave the monastery. However, when the Beatas Agustinas were invited to go to the Philippines to take care of young girls, orphaned because of the cholera epidemic, her desire for convent life was rekindled.

She entered the Beaterio de Mantelatas de San Agustin of Barcelona as a postulant and joined the second group of Beatas who left for Manila on September 1, 1883, and reached Manila on October 5, 1883.[1]

On November 21, 1883, she received the Augustinian habit of the tertiary order at the chapel of the orphanage in Mandaluyong. She was given the name Sor Maria de la Consolacion and was called Sor Consuelo upon her entrance to the novitiate.[1]

Her profession of temporary vows was initiated despite questions from the Archbishop of Manila and Sor Antonia Campillo, the superior. The Augustinian priests pushed through with the simple ceremonies in the chapel of the Asilo in Mandaluyong on December 26, 1884. Her sponsor was Doña Maria del Carmen Ayala de Roxas. Sor Consuelo was the first peninsular woman, that is, a lady born in Spain, to be clothed and to profess as a Beata in the Philippines.[2] At the Asilo, she provided the children with food, shelter, clothing, and education. She also spent a great deal of time giving music lessons. She had a gift of making the girls feel at ease with her.

When the local community was divided into two, Sor Consuelo opted to remain in the Asilo or orphanage in Mandaluyong with Sor Monica, Sor Remedios, and Sor Rita who was their superior. The rest of the Beatas were sent to the Beaterio de Santa Rita in Pasig, together with the paying students.

Life in Manila was difficult. Of the original seven beatas sent from Barcelona in 1883, only the two Barceló sisters remained. To replenish the number of beatas for the Asilo, Sor Rita, with Sor Consuelo, proposed two simultaneous sources of workers for the lord’s vineyard: a novitiate in Spain (Agustinas Misioneras de Ultramar, which the surviving beatas founded upon their return to Barcelona) and another one in the Philippines for the formation of native sisters. Native vocations to the religious life were accepted as early as 1885. Mother Consuelo served as their mistress of novices.

Fearing reprisals from the revolutionaries upon the discovery of the Katipunan in 1896, the Barceló sisters and the Filipino beatas prayed ardently to their patroness, Our Lady of Consolation. No untoward incident occurred anywhere near the premises of the orphanage.

When the 1898 revolution broke out, Mother Consuelo was already the superior of the Colegio-Asilo while Mother Rita was the mistress of novices. During the Filipino-American war, Mother Consuelo, the sisters, and their almost 200 orphan-wards left the Asilo on June 11, 1898. They fled towards Manila.

When the Americans came, the Augustinian provincial officially dissolved the sisters’ community, as well as their Colegio-Asilo. Mother Rita and mother Consuelo, bound by strict obedience, left the Philippines for Spain on March 13, 1899.[2] The Filipino beatas were left “with neither a house nor a single cent nor the hope of acquiring it.” But they resolved to stay together to preserve their community. They were supported by the daughters of charity, especially Mother Maria Ocariz.

The Filipino sisters applied for affiliation with the Agustinas Misioneras in Madrid. They also applied with the Beaterio de Barcelona. But their applications were denied.

The Hermanas Agustinas Terciarias de las Islas Filipinas received on May 31, 1902, the official aggregation to the Augustinian Order by the Prior General in Rome. This was upon the recommendation of Mother Rita before she died in Barcelona.

Back in the Beaterio of Barcelona, Mother Consuelo adapted so harmoniously with the Spanish Beatas that, in recognition of her personal qualities and her administrative ability, the members of the community elected her as their superior in February 1903. It was unprecedented for a beata to attain this position in a religious house where she did not originate. It was also rare for a beata to have become superior in two distinct communities (Mandaluyong and Barcelona).

On January 11, 1904, Father Bernabe Jimenez, the then spiritual director of the Filipino sisters, wrote Mother Consuelo informing her that the apostolic delegate, who had received petitions from the Filipino sisters in Manila for her and for Mother Rita’s return, had approved the petitions. But Mother Rita died on May 14, 1904 before she could return to the Philippines. On June 18, 1904, Mother Consuelo returned to the Philippines alone.

Upon Mother Consuelo’s return to the Philippines, she was at first appointed superior of the new novitiate house of St. Joseph in Sta. Ana, Manila. She later became the prioress of the sisters of Colegio de la Consolacion, Manila, until 1915 when she was elected the first Superior General.[2] She served in this capacity for five terms serving as such for 25 years until her death.[1] The college was totally destroyed by fire on December 26, 1909, prompting the sisters to take refuge in Santa Isabel College and Santa Rita College. Incidentally, on February 12, 1910, Colegio de la Consolacion received “government recognition”, becoming the first private school to be recognized by the department of education during the American rule.

Death
On July 31, 1940, she suffered two strong heart attacks and was brought to the hospital. The Most Rev. Michael J. O'Doherty, DD went to pay her a visit when she was already unconscious. On seeing the sisters weeping, he remarked, “Why do you weep? You should be glad to have in heaven a saint to intercede for you. If Sor Consuelo is not a saint, then there is no saint in heaven.”

Mother Consuelo died in the morning of August 4, 1940, at the age of 83. Her remains were exposed in the chapel of Colegio de la Consolacion, Manila, where hundreds of girls both young and old came to offer their last tribute of love and gratitude. Her burial was a triumph rather than a funeral.

Legacy
The principal theological virtue that characterizes the life and death of Mother Consuelo Barceló is the love of God and neighbor. Her words and her action give credence to her great charity that burst forth from the deep love of God so that she concretely demonstrated it in her love of her neighbors – her religious sisters, sisters of other congregations, the bishops, priests, the orphans and the working girls, the teachers and personnel of Augustinian schools, her family and other people, especially the poor. Her life had a clear option for the poor as seen in her exhortations to sisters to open their hearts to them.

The cardinal virtue that is foremost in her life is justice – both human and divine. This parallels the theological virtue of love of God and neighbor. She loved people so that she desired to give them what was their due. She loved God so that she gave to God, to the church, and to her institute what belonged to each of them. Coupled with justice is her prudence, fortitude and temperance which enabled her to judge justly and decide lovingly for the needs and concerns of the congregation and her individual sisters.

She was exemplary in living the evangelical counsels of obedience, poverty, and chastity vis-à-vis humility. She was truly a daughter of St. Augustine in her faithfulness to the rule and love for religious community life, bearing in mind and always that the sisters are called to be of one mind and one heart intent upon God.

Veneration
Barcelo Pages is currently in consideration for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church with protocol number 2472 assigned by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On June 18, 2002, she was declared Servant of God and on December 20, 2012, she was declared venerable.[3]
